How to Stay on Track With Your Goals

How Are Your New Year's Resolutions Looking? 

How's everyone's New Years resolution’s going? Or have you forgotten that you even made any already? If you've fallen off track, don’t give up; instead go back and review your resolutions.  Every day's a new day and an opportunity to start afresh. Here's how to stay on track with your goals.

Were they SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, timed) goals or did they look more like this:

  • Lose weight
  • Go to the gym more
  • Quit Smoking
  • Save Money
  • Drink less alcohol

What's wrong with these goals?  

They look good, right? Wrong! Don't get me wrong; the intentions great but they're not S.M.AR.T goals; meaning they're not specific, manageable or timed.  

There’s no plan of action, deadline or measurable results so how can you accomplish what you’re not clear about or don’t have action plans in place to achieve them?  To get results you need a plan; there's a famous saying "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail".

So with this is mind, go back and re-write your goals, asking yourself questions along the way. For example if your goal was to lose weight; how much weight? By when? Break your goals down into manageable sections, e.g. if you’re goal is to lose 10lbs in 3 months you need to lose 3.3lbs per month which is less than 1lb a week. 

Now that you have something measurable and timed, how are you going to achieve that goal? Be specific e.g. workout 5x per week, eat junk/processed food only once a week, cut drinking down to X amount per week, go to X amount of fitness classes on day X, Y & Z, plan and prep what I'm going to eat for the week, only buy fresh produce.

"The more specific your plan of action, the more you can see how well you’re doing at following the plan or falling off of it!"

Keep track every week or two to make sure you’re on track and if not go back over your plan of action and tweak it; nothing’s set in stone and it has to work for you not someone else! If it's not working, reassess other alternatives that do. There are many routes to the same destination. This doesn't mean giving up on your goals, it means finding new ways to achieve them that works for you.

Now that you’ve got your new S.M.A.R.T goals in place, feel positive knowing that you have a plan of action and can achieve your goals.

Every time you feel you’re slipping, go back and re-evaluate your resolutions.

  • Why are you slipping?
  • Why isn’t the plan realistic and attainable for you and make changes so that it is.

Everyone is different and what’s realistic for one person isn’t for another so forget comparing yourself to others and just concentrate on being the best version of you. After all, you’re pretty fabulous and lovable; just look at your family and friends to know that and quit being so hard on yourself. Being the best version of you means the more you have to offer them too; so live up to your potential, it’s pretty incredible!
